Targets of antimalarial drugs
Illustration depicting the stages of malaria parasite within a human host
- Top left: exoerythrocytic cycle (within the liver)
- Bottom left: erythrocytic cycle (within blood)
- Right: legend of antimalarial drugs and their targets
The four main targets of antimalarial drugs are the tissue schizont, hypnozoite, blood schizont, and gametocyte, which are the asexual developmental stages of malaria parasites that occur within the liver and blood of an infected human host. Most antimalarial drugs act on the erythrocytic stages of the malaria parasite, especially the blood schizonts. Primaquin is the only antimalarial that attacks the hypnozoites, which are the dormant stages of stages of P. vivax and P. ovale, responsible for relapses of malaria.
Flashcard 300: _____ and secukinumab are monoclonal antibodies against IL-17A used to treat psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis

IL-23 stimulates Th17 cells which leads to Crohns, UC, and psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis. IL-23 also leads to stimulation of gamma-delta T cells which is important for the development of psoriatic arthritis.
Newly approved treatment for UC. IL-23 is considered the central cytokine in Crohn's and possibly UC (blocked by tildrakizumab)
